Whether you’re too cheap for a dozen roses or just learned how to send a text message, here is your chance to impress that special someone (online) in your life with a few of my favorite expressive emoticons. For the uninitiated, turn your head sideways to get the image in your head. For those using certain instant messengers, like Blackberry’s, some of these text emoticons will automatically convert into colorful icons. Have fun!

The basics:

Heart:  <3
Rose:   —~—<-@

Advanced:

Hug:  { }
Kissing:     (:-)(-:)
Princess:  \&&&/
Queen:  \%%%/
King:  \vvv/
Tongue in Cheek:   :-J
Tongue-tied:    :-&

Just in case:

Broken heart:  </3
Beer and Pretzels:    (_)]  & & &

Have you wanted either for yourself or as a gift to someone who wants or needs email in their pocket but doesn’t need a phone, a built-in camera, an mp3 player and a coffee maker (just kidding)? There is a device for you and it’s called the Peek. And, to make it all the sweeter, it is less than $100 and the monthly fee for $20 for unlimited messages.

Time Magazine gave this little device the Best Invention of 2008 for good reason.

Slide Share (www.slideshare.net) is for PowerPoint what YouTube is for videos!

If you have ever wanted to take your PowerPoint presentation, and without converting each slide to HTML, easily put it up online so that you could send it off to millions (or tens) of people right from your email, then you need Slide Share. And, like YouTube, it’s free.

There are many similarities to YouTube. One significant one is that uploading your PowerPoint presentation is to a whole community of people within SlideShare and on the Internet. You can add a better title, further description and tags. You can choose a category (nearly identical to YouTube’s categories). The ease of uploading couldn’t be any simpler. Like YouTube, you need to wait a bit after your upload while the file is processed. The bigger the file, the longer the wait. You can upload a PowerPoint of up to 100Mb in size, per presentation.

Here is an example of a portion of my presentation The Invisible Website, and how to setup a Word Press account.

PowerPoint 2007 users need to save presentations in 97-2003 compatibility. I had a fade-in effect on my graphic in slide 2, in the presentation above, and it did not appear in the online version. Still, this is an easy way for PowerPoint to have a life online.

Cheers,
Richard D. Lee
